Ventilating or ventilation (the V in HVAC) is the process of exchanging or replacing air in any space to provide high indoor air quality which involves temperature control, oxygen replenishment, and removal of moisture, odors, smoke, heat, dust, airborne bacteria, carbon dioxide, and other gases. Ventilation removes unpleasant smells and excessive moisture, introduces outside air, keeps interior building air circulating, and prevents stagnation of the interior air.

Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC[1]) is the technology of indoor and vehicular environmental comfort. Its goal is to provide thermal comfort and acceptable indoor air quality. HVAC system design is a subdiscipline of mechanical engineering, based on the principles of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics and heat transfer. "Refrigeration" is sometimes added to the field's abbreviation, as HVAC&R or HVACR or "ventilation" is dropped, as in HACR (as in the designation of HACR-rated circuit breakers).
Central, "all-air" air-conditioning systems (or package systems) with a combined outdoor condenser/evaporator unit are often installed in North American residences, offices, and public buildings, but are difficult to retrofit (install in a building that was not designed to receive it) because of the bulky air ducts required. (Minisplit ductless systems are used in these situations.) Outside of North America, packaged systems are only used in limited applications involving large indoor space such as stadiums, theatres or exhibition halls.
Energy efficiency can be improved even more in central heating systems by introducing zoned heating. This allows a more granular application of heat, similar to non-central heating systems. Zones are controlled by multiple thermostats. In water heating systems the thermostats control zone valves, and in forced air systems they control zone dampers inside the vents which selectively block the flow of air. In this case, the control system is very critical to maintaining a proper temperature.
"I had several fits and starts trying to get an A/C HVAC system installed in my home in Boulder. I talked to multiple local contractors, and did a great deal of research on what people are paying for such work in various parts of the country. There is a huge disconnect between the Boulder market, and the rest of the country, based on nothing more than local contractors grossly overcharging gullible, very affluent, customers. This leaves the average Joe or Jane to either pay up, or fend for themselves. Some of the locals seemed promising, only to hit us with outrageously overpriced bids. I'm not talking about a 20% "local vig"--I'm talking 2-3 times national rates! Some never showed up, some came to look at the job, then never even followed up, like they just couldn't be bothered. Steels Bros, in complete contrast to these difficulties, showed up when they said they would, did what they said they would do, and did it all for a fair price. At each step, they were concerned that they were earning my satisfaction with their work. I am a huge believer in providing the best customer service possible in my own work, and Steele Bros showed the same commitment. I would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone that wants a big job done right, at a fair price. "
Prices for central-air HVAC systems will vary. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670 but can run as high as $5,000 or even $12,000 depending on the capacity you need and other factors. Installing central air conditioning requires an entire system that works together to draw hot air out of your home. The system includes an outdoor unit, which houses the condenser and compressor, and the evaporator coils. If you don’t have an existing duct system, ductwork will need to be installed, which will affect labor and material costs. Leaking or damaged ducts will also need to be replaced.

"Jim did a great job. His price was $1300 cheaper on replacing both the attic and outside units (everything new). What I liked about him is that he was not pushing services. Although, he assessed and pointed it out everything that needed to be fixed, at the same time, he was sharing how I could do the work myself if I wanted to save the money. I really liked that. Final work was a Trane- 4 Ton, 14 Seer Heat-Pump System with 1year warranty on labor and the 10 year parts from the Trane. It works great so far. I had a 2.5 ton old ac that even when it worked well would take hours to cool down the house. No kidding, now it cools the house from 76 to 72 in 15 minutes. After using thumbtack for a while, I realized that there are good workers that will do the job for a lot cheaper. You just need to be patient and do the estimates with all the contractors that send you messages. Oh, and please, rely on the reviews. I would definably recommend 911 AC/services !!! Great job Jim!"
Heil HVAC is another one of the best air conditioner brands that doesn’t get as much love as they should. This AC brand’s tech allows different heating and cooling components  send information and synchronize performance, becoming more energy efficient and reliable overall. Heil AC products can achieve up to a 97% efficiency rating and SEER figures of 19. They also come with comprehensive 10 year warranties.
"Very impressed. Returned call within 24 hours. They came out the same day I spoke with them and made the repair within 25 minutes. Very low service call fee. I had another repair service out two weeks earlier and after 3 service calls and the central air still not fixed and temperatures in the high 90's, it was such a relief to have a company identify the problem, have the necessary part with them and fix the problem."

Have your contractor do a load calculation based on a recognized method, such as one in Manual J from the ACCA. The contractor’s evaluation should include whether your ducts need to be resized, sealed and insulated, or replaced. Remember that an indoor evaporator coil and outdoor condenser must be a matched set from the same brand, or the performance, efficiency, and capacity might not meet expectations.

Getting one of the best air conditioner brands is important whether you’re replacing an old HVAC system, or having the first AC unit system put in your brand new home, but it’s not everything. The best Trane, Ruud, or American Standard HVAC system won’t perform any better than a no-name bargain air conditioner system if it’s not installed properly by a quality HVAC contractor. It’s important to find an HVAC installation professional with high ratings and expert knowledge within the field so that your top brand can perform at optimal efficiency.

The contactor (relay) and start/run capacitor(s) (see illustration below) fail most often and are inexpensive. So it’s a safe bet to buy and install those parts right away, especially if your air conditioning service unit is older than five years. The condenser fan motor can also fail, but it runs about $150 — hold off buying that unless you’re sure that’s the culprit.
The amount of time air duct cleaning takes can depend on how extensive your duct system is, how old your air ducts are, and whether they have ever been cleaned. On average, expect a standard size home (between 2,000 and 3,000 square feet) to take 2-5 hours for one to two technicians to clean. Here are the proper protocol and equipment you should expect from a professional duct cleaning service, as recommended by the Environmental Protection Agency:
Dichlorodifluoromethane (R-12) was the most common blend used in automobiles in the U.S. until 1994, when most designs changed to R-134A due to the ozone-depleting potential of R-12. R-11 and R-12 are no longer manufactured in the U.S. for this type of application, so the only source for air-conditioning repair purposes is the cleaned and purified gas recovered from other air conditioner systems. Several non-ozone-depleting refrigerants have been developed as alternatives, including R-410A. It was first commercially used by Carrier Corp. under the brand name Puron.[citation needed]
They are also often harder to install. A proper location on the roof must be selected that can support the weight of the unit. Then a platform must be built and a drain pipe for the unit must be run along the roof to avoid problems with mold and corrosion. A crane must be used to lift the unit onto the roof while a team guides it into place and hooks it up.

"We've had Cody as our cooling and AC tech for three years and he has helped us keep an aging system going and working well. We like the fact that GV Cooling & Heating has assigned us an excellent tech who knows us and our system. Cody shows up on time, explains what he's doing or has done and is thorough in his maintenance procedures even in a hot Arizona attic. He and his company really deserve our five-star rating."
